Keeping a Family Time Line

 August 14, 2019

"Hey Mom, when did we move to Minooka the first time?" "Mom, what year did we get that pot bellied pig?" "Oh, Mom, what year did I get confirmed?" Oy, the questions. Too bad there's too much stuff in my brain for me to remember all of these important dates! I finally sat down this year and made up a simple family time line. As you can see, it still has some holes.

In our family Bible there is a place in front to record all the important birth and sacrament information, but I found that that wasn't enough.

We've moved so many times over the past years and every once in awhile someone will ask when we lived in a certain house. I can never remember and then a discussion ensues over what the actual date was. Usually there is one kid who remembers the correct answer, but if that one isn't around at the time, we're all stumped.

That's why I finally bit the bullet and pulled out my trusty Excel spreadsheet and put it all down in print.

A Family Time Line - Simple or Fancy

Of course, I could have made a Word Doc or a Google Doc or any of those options to make it plain and simple.

I did some researching online and there are a plethora of programs you can find to make a super fancy one for your family. This one looks like a lot of fun and it's free.

Either way, the important thing is to start this now while you still remember things! As you add more kids and more life events, dates and years will get all jumbled, trust me. You might have to engage your children in this project so that you can fill in any holes you might have.

Life moves by so quickly that I know I want to remember everything but I can't. This has been a great way to easily document the important events that have occurred in our family. It didn't take very long and it was nice to tackle something off my to-be-organized list.

I'm looking forward to all the things in the future that I can add to our family time line!

Have you kept a family time line? If so, have you just done a simple document or did you go all fancy? Share your experience in the comments below!
